The Deco movement was in full swing, art was on everyone's mind, craftsmen were doing some of their finest work, and American watch manufacturers were vying for the spotlight. Each watch house sought to be set apart as the leader in style and design. The crash had not yet hit and money flowed freely from Wall Street to Fifth Avenue; customers could afford to pay whatever it took to have the finest, the best, the brightest. With the Jazz Age in full kick, Elgin Watch Company decided to garner the spot as the finest house for ladies timepieces. They commissioned enamel artists to create a watch that would sum up the energy and art of the Deco movement.

This solid 14k white gold wire-lug wristwatch, measuring 30mm lug-to-lug by 16mm wide, is as wonderful and delicate a timepiece as one will find anywhere. Worthy of adorning Daisy Buchanan herself, this classic features a stunning, completely original pearlescent dial with bold, stylized numerals and "moderne" blued steel hands. A coin-edged crown and solid glass crystal appear original to the piece. The case is, of course, crisp and wonderful, with startlingly artful black enamel "stringing" adorning the bezel. Such work is not only the highest form of art in jewelry of the Deco period, it is all but a lost art today.

An un-engraved back snaps open nicely to reveal a cleaned, oiled and serviced ruby-jeweled high-grade movement with compensated balance and screw jeweled settings. Each of these movements was hand-assembled: for instance, screw-jeweled settings means that someone — usually a young lady — sat with a screwdriver almost as thin as a human hair and "screw-set" all these jewels by hand. Where can one find such work today? Only in the finest watch houses in Switzerland.

Treat yourself to this classic: overwhelm your friends, stun your colleagues and be the envy of the dinner party. We at Strickland Vintage Watches are happy to custom-fit a correct ribbon band to your wrist measurements. We also are delighted to offer the piece in an original Elgin factory presentation inner and outer box set.
