For all of the accomplishments and accolades bestowed on Helbros, the company remains tantalizingly enigmatic. Founded in 1913 by the Helbein brothers, the “Manufacture D’Horlogerie Helbros, Helbein Freres” later became known simply as “Helbros,” a contraction of (HEL)bein (BROS)Brothers. With offices in Geneve, New York, Los Angeles and Neuchatel, Switzerland, Helbros exerted a world presence in the watch industry.
The style of Helbros is particularly distinctive; in fact, it’s one of the most underrated of the Deco era. Their designers took advantage of the freedom of the era to produce watches and packaging with exceptional lines and presence. Among other accomplishments was being one of the first Swiss companies to recognize the importance of the newfangled "wristlet" watch.
By the 1930s, aeroplane travel was becoming increasing popular, and men’s wristwatches were all the rage. Helbros created a special, high-grade “Aviators” model with thick crystal and rotating bezel designed for pilots use. Marketed under its “Brooks” brand, the watch was resilient, accurate and a benchmark through WWII.
We're quite pleased to offer this rare, original Brooks/Helbros “Aviators” fixed-lug wristwatch. Luminous, stylized Arabic numerals and micro-graduated sub-seconds register highlight an untouched champagne dial; excellent original "stained glass" hands with luminous centers and "pumpkin" crown round out what must be one of the finest examples a Brooks/Helbros Aviator “wristlet” watch one can find anywhere, at any price.
Measuring approx. 45mm lug-to-lug by 37mm in diameter and a full 12mm thick, the watch sports a correctly restored mineral crystal and hinged case with cuvette. Open it and you'll find a highly ruby-jeweled Helbros movement — completely cleaned, oiled and calibrated so that one may wear it as a dependable timepiece.
Please feel free to admire own faithful rendition of the original pigskin strap that would have been contemporary to the piece. Hand-crafted by Strickland Vintage Watches, it is worthy of a Hollywood close-up or your handsome wrist!
