During the Great Depression, through the Deco and WWII eras, wristwatches were a clear means of class distinction. All eyes were on the wrist and American timepieces from manufacturers such as Hamilton Watch Company were the envy of the world.
For example, the solid platinum "Rutledge" – released by Hamilton in 1935 during the Great Depression – was a watch few could afford and everyone wanted. When the watch debuted, it cost the astronomical sum of $175. To put this amount into perspective; in 1935, a brand new car cost $580.
This extraordinary work of wrist art featured a heavy, conservative 36mm by 21mm case that contained one of Hamilton's finest movements, the 19-jewel caliber "982," itself fitted with gold jewel settings. During the depths of the Depression, if you wore a Rutledge, you had arrived.
We're delighted to offer a splendid example of the famed solid platinum Hamilton "Rutledge," looking much the way it did when it emerged from the factory. Heavy, well-proportioned; with a classic dial sporting solid 18K white gold markers, it represents the perfect union of form and function from an era when such things were greatly appreciated.
We offer this work of wrist art fitted with a period chocolate alligator strap and blue velvet-lined Hamilton presentation box. If you are looking for an example and indication of excellence, you have it.
We love our overseas buyers, but if the watch is purchased outside the U.S., we must replace the strap with a leather one.
