Gruen emerged as one of the preeminent watch houses in the United States, producing accurate timepieces in stylish cases that became Jazz-Age darlings. Watch houses sought to outdo one another, carrying the wristwatch as a fashion statement to ever higher levels, but none seemed to touch the panache of Gruen. Founded in the United States in 1876, the legacy of Deitrich Gruen is a benchmark for watch designers to this day.

This Deco Gruen certainly illustrates the adage "Out with the curves, in with the geometric lines." So was the philosophy of "L'Exposition des Arts Decoratifs," an international fair held in Paris in 1925, from which the term "Deco" was derived. Designs were less florid, more geometric, drawing on abstract and cubist influences.

It was an unbeatable combination of style and excellent timekeeping ability that made Gruen the watch of choice for many physicians of the era. Called "duo-dials" or "doctor's watches," these rare models were specifically designed for those in the medical profession who needed a large sub-seconds register to time pulses. Exquisitely balanced; beautifully engineered, these duo-dials were as prized during their production as they are today. So popular were their watches among professionals, Gruen was persuaded to cooperate with Rolex to supply movements for a Rolex version – the famous "Prince" duo-dial.

We are delighted to offer this exceedingly rare example of the Gruen dual dial in gleaming yellow gold-fill, stunning from its slightly oversized "Chrysler Building" case to its original ice-cream dial featuring stylized numerals to its completely original, expertly engineered 17 ruby jeweled 500 caliber movement, this classic timepiece exudes class and distinction.

Measuring approximately 43mm lug-to-lug by 20mm wide, this astonishing work of wrist art is one of the most fetching pieces of horological history we've had the pleasure to offer, destined to create waves of envy around anyone fortunate enough to wear it.

We have taken the liberty of having it cleaned, oiled and calibrated to keep time as intended. Also, we have taken the opportunity to fit the piece with a period lizard strap and matching yellow gold-fill buckle. Offered in period Gruen royal blue presentation case.

We love our overseas buyers, but if the watch is purchased outside the U.S., we must replace the strap with a leather one.
