Founded in 1826 by Julien Gallet, the House of Gallet flourished under the guidance of Julien's two sons. In 1864, before the smoke had cleared from the Civil War, Gallet opened up a branch in New York and established a trading relationship with Jules Racine. Winning awards such as the coveted silver metal at the Swiss National Exhibition in Geneva and, in 1914, the Grand Prize at the Swiss National Exhibition in Berne, Gallet and their "Racines" became sought-after by those with money enough to afford them.
Gallet continued to amaze horologists and jewelers by developing complicated movements, timers and chronographs in varying calibers. In the '30s, Gallet designed and marketed the popular "duo-dial" configuration, with separate chapters for hours and minutes, and a large sweep second hand used, in many cases, by physicians to measure pulse-rates. During the late '30s through WWII Gallet produced two-register chronographs for the war effort.
Known for their resilience and accuracy, Gallet chronographs have become highly prized by historians and collectors.
And what a Gallet chronograph this! Undeniably a classic, this magnificent Multrchron "998" triple-date, triple register work of wrist art is absolutely original, from its mesmeric dial to its hefty, solid stainless steel case. We've had the pleasure to offer some of the finest vintage timepieces available anywhere yet have never had a complicated chronograph quite this substantial. Measuring an impressive 43mm lug-to-lug by 35mm in diameter(!), it has the sort of wrist presence one would expect in a timepiece of this caliber.
We have taken the liberty of completely cleaning, oiling and calibrating this work of art so that it keeps time and "flies back" as it was intended, as well as fitting it with a new-old stock black sharkskin chrono strap and buckle of the era. We're pleased to offer the piece in a custom-fitted burl maple presentation case.
