Long considered part of the famed Nivada Grenchen Watch Company in much the same way Longines is associated with Wittnauer; the Croton and Nivada Grenchen, either together or separately, have been producing high-grade timepieces since 1878. Famous for their "Croton Aquamatic" and "Aquamedico" models, Croton revolutionized watchmaking by creating a self-winding movement with only five parts added to a standard eubach. These automatic parts could be removed, serviced and replaced in a matter of minutes. Croton was also a leader in waterproofing techniques and have been long-time exhibitors at the Basle Fair, well-respected among those who know and appreciate quality, rugged timepieces.

In keeping with this legacy of excellence, this breathtakingly handsome Croton "Chronomaster" is a triumph of horology.

Created in 1961 for the U.S. market, the watch was an ultimate expression of timekeeping for upscale adventures. Advertisements hailed the piece as the perfect chronograph for "sports car drivers, airline pilots, skin divers, yacht race enthusiasts, engineers, navigators, scientists, business executives, and a host of others.”

This example is from the early to late '60s/early '70s. A marvelous, completely original ink-black dial is marked Croton/Shockmaster/Aviator/Sea-Diver/Swiss with contrasting sub-dials. The 30 min sub-dial at 3 o’clock has a red "pie" marker with first five minutes delineated from 5 to 1 – which is said to mark the countdown of the start of a yacht regatta.

It is a beefy thing, measuring approximately 46mm by 38mm with 19mm lugs fitted with a new-old stock "Tropic" dive strap. Powered by a most impressive Landeron 248, it is considered a point of pride of Swiss craftsmanship and pure engineering prowess.

The Croton is completely original and unpolished, having been carefully cleaned, oiled and calibrated to be worn and enjoyed. We’re pleased to offer this uncommon find in a custom-fitted velvet-lined presentation case.
